Health Insurance a Key Component in Financial Planning

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Many people think they understand how health care expenses will impact them but often grossly underestimate their future health care costs. Many also believe they will be able to rely on coverage from Medicare and their employers during their golden years. However, this may not be the case, as the number of businesses offering retiree health benefits is steadily declining and the financial pressure on Medicare seems to be increasing. (more…)

Louisiana Health Insurance At Risk With Mandates

Sometimes it is true indeed that the more things change, the more they remain the same. That may be the case with our new Legislature and the issue of health insurance mandates (more…)

Universal health care would be a boon to the free market

Rudy Giuliani has been called ”Bush with brains” by those who fear that the former New York City mayor shares a penchant for unbridled executive power. But the Republican presidential primary frontrunner seems to have a screw loose when it comes to campaigning. His attack of Hillary Clinton’s health care proposal with the bugaboo of European-style ‘’socialized” medicine is not only full of factual holes, but it will surely bite him in the butt if he makes it to the general election.

Americans were taken in by health insurance industry foils Harry and Louise the first time Clinton offered this country decent health care reform, but they won’t be fooled again. If Giuliani wants to make this election a referendum on America’s health care system, he’s going to flame out faster than a hospital can dump an uninsured patient.

Utah’s Premium Partnership for Health (UPP) encourages low-wage workers to enroll in their employer’s insurance plan by offering a monthly rebate to help pay the premiums. Successful in other states, the year-old program has been a “life-saver” for Brailsford. But it hasn’t proved very popular. (more…)

Health reform negotiations moving forward in state capital

Friday, November 9th, 2007

SACRAMENTO – Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is moving toward a possible deal with Democrats on health care. The two sides have compromised on key issues, such as how much employers should pay toward their workers’ health coverage, although there is still significant distance between them when it comes to small businesses.

Movement came suddenly this week, after months of deadlock. On Monday, Democrats agreed to a requirement that all Californians obtain health insurance, the cornerstone of the reform plan Schwarzenegger unveiled in January. (more…)

Tips to Lower Your Health Insurance Premium

Soaring medical expenses, unaffordable health insurance and a nation that’s up to its eyeballs in consumer debt. America’s health system is a ticking time bomb and the culprit is sharply rising healthcare costs. In 2003, nearly 50 million people spent more than 10% of their families income on health care. Yet in a nation where the average person has over $9,000 in credit card debt, few of us are in a position to absorb the costs of a medical emergency. (more…)
