Free Health Insurance Debate

Monday, November 12th, 2007

The State Children’s Health Insurance Program (S CHIP) that has been a topic of major debate in congress is having an effect on people in central Virginia. Some want to expand the insurance program to include more families but not all our local lawmakers agree. This national debate is being battled in our backyard.

Keith Groomes is a single dad raising two teenagers and working two jobs. Groomes stated, “It gives me peace of mind knowing that I don’t have another bill on top of my head that I have to somehow fit into my budget. I thought it was in my best interest to join it because unfortunately I’m not in the position to be able to pay the full amount.” (more…)

Drivers ‘think UK insurance covers them in Europe’

Sunday, November 11th, 2007

Many British drivers mistakenly believe that their UK car insurance will automatically cover them on European roads, an industry expert has said.

However, esure’s Adrian Webb explained that most policies only covered third party damages.

Mr Webb said that it was important the drivers contacted their provider and arranged additional cover before driving in Europe.

“People have got very confused over this whole area; people seem to have absorbed the view erroneously that having an insurance policy with a UK company covers you anywhere within the EU,” he explained. (more…)

An auto insurance company is now offering their owners a benefit for pets.

Sticker Shock: Health insurance premiums rising up to 25%

Sunday, November 11th, 2007

Daniel Morano has been happily using the same health insurance plan from Independent Health Association for 12 years. But the 59-year-old retired postal worker from Grand Island was stunned when he opened his mail the other day.

His monthly payment of $226.72 will soar next year to $348.86 a month, or $4,186.32 a year. That’s a whopping 54 percent increase, all at once.

In fact, the full monthly premium, including what his employer pays, actually went up 17.1 percent, to $1,062.34, still a hefty hike for someone on fixed income. But to keep its own costs under control, the Postal Service isn’t picking up most of that total increase — Morano and his fellow retirees are. (more…)

What to consider when your teen’s car is wrecked

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

The aging Oldsmobile you purchased from Granny may not be the coolest ride on the street, but it’s perfect for your inexperienced teenage driver.

Wrapped in steel and sheet metal, the blue bomber is safe, the engine purrs, gas mileage is decent, and the odometer hasn’t crossed 60,000 miles. (more…)

Senator Kuipers obstructing Legislative Reforms

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

Senator Wayne Kuipers and other Michigan Senators have buried legislation deep within Senate sub-committees to ensure they won’t see the light of day. Potential laws that could protect children, the elderly, victims of drunk drivers, and those who are mentally incapacitated have been deep-6′d by Kuipers and other Senators and they hope voters like you and me never find out about it.

The Chamber of Commerce, the Insurance Insustry Lobby, and wealthy conservative donors to the Senator’s pockets ensure that these bills won’t see the light of day.

Who wants them to see the light of day? (more…)

Good credit can help you save on insurance, maybe even get a job

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

When one longtime St. Louisan saw his car insurance bill jump 28 percent, he was shocked.

He was even more irate when he learned the reason: an unresolved issue with a creditor had left a blot on his otherwise unblemished credit report. He didn’t understand what his credit report had to do with his car insurance rate.

More and more, credit information is being used by businesses other than lenders or credit card issuers. Bad credit could hurt your search for a job or even leave you without a place to live. (more…)

State promoting health insurance program for the working poor

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

There’s a certain comfort, not to mention pride, that comes from providing for your family. That includes meeting your children’s medical needs, something Karen Brailsford wasn’t confident she could do – until recently. The mother of five is among a small number of Utahns taking advantage of an experiment to help the working poor buy health insurance. Utah’s Premium Partnership for Health (UPP) encourages low-wage workers to enroll in their employer’s insurance plan by offering a monthly rebate to help pay the premiums. Successful in other states, the year-old program has been a “life-saver” for Brailsford. But it hasn’t proved very popular. (more…)

MEXICO CITY — President Felipe Calderon, visiting flood-crippled Tabasco and Chiapas states Friday, called on all Mexicans to continue donating aid for months to come and warned officials not to use it for political purposes.

“As time passes the interest and worry usually diminish,” Calderon said of the nationwide public response to the flooding. “This help must continue not only for the coming days, but for the coming weeks and months.” (more…)
