Over 5 million college students in the U.S. lack coverage under their parents’ health insurance plans. Most colleges try to fill this gap by offering a school-sponsored health insurance plan. But a school’s seal of approval does not mean the plan will be sufficient in a time of need. In fact, better options may be available elsewhere. Students and parents should thoroughly examine the plan before signing up. Here are a few things industry experts say you should consider when looking for a college health plan:

•Maximum Benefits vs. Deductibles. Most college plans have a very low benefits ceiling—often $30,000 or less. This won’t cover large medical issues such as cancer or injuries suffered in a car accident. Other plans found on sites such as eHealthInsurance.com offer much higher coverage levels, often $1 million or more. But the deductibles for these plans are higher—meaning the student must pay more out of pocket before insurance kicks in. Buyers should think carefully about the coverage levels being sacrificed for lower deductibles.

•Interior Caps. Some college insurance plans are structured so it is nearly impossible to take advantage of all the benefits. This is done through so-called “interior caps,” which put a lower ceiling on a certain type of health service like surgeons’ fees and hospital room and board. Look carefully for “per day” caps on expenses or a category such as “miscellaneous expenses,” which often includes an array of charges such as lab tests, X-rays, and medicine. One medical procedure can easily surpass these interior caps, and the patient will end up footing the bill.

•Prescription Drugs. Most plans put a cap on the coverage for prescription drugs. These caps, however, can vary from $400 to $5,000-plus. At the low end, the coverage may work for an occasional bout with strep throat. But patients taking prescription drugs regularly to combat afflictions such as depression or anxiety would be poorly covered.

•Exclusions. At the bottom of most insurance plans is a list of exclusions—medical issues or procedures that aren’t covered. Plans vary widely: Some cover things like allergy testing, hearing tests, or elective abortion, while others don’t. Look for plans that exclude coverage for issues not atypical for college kids, such as injuries suffered while intoxicated. One plan viewed by BusinessWeek went so far as to exclude coverage for accidents suffered while roller skating or surfing.

•Loss Ratios. Colleges seldom disclose a key statistic for judging their plans, known as a “loss ratio” or “benefits ratio.” This measures the insurance claims paid against the health premiums collected. The average loss ratio across the industry tends to be about 80%, meaning $5 in premiums is collected for every $4 paid to the health-care providers. The remaining $1 goes to administrative costs and profit. Plans that notch ratios of 70% or lower are not delivering bang for the buck to the customers. Many college-plan loss ratios viewed by BusinessWeek were well below 70%; and some were below 50%. Ask the school’s insurance office for several years of its plan’s loss ratios. If they don’t have the data, walk away. It means the school isn’t closely monitoring the plan.

Flooding causes £1 billion worth of damage in the UK every year, according to the Environment Agency, and that is just a normal year unlike last summer’s exceptional rainfall.

Statistics from the Environment Agency show that there are currently more than 2.2 million homes situated in areas at risk of river or coastal flooding in the UK. Last summer, as many as 50,000 homes were flooded, many of which had never flooded before, highlighting the need for sufficient home insurance.

Even houses that are not directly at risk of flooding can find themselves damaged by surface water flooding when drains become unable to cope with the influx of rain water.

As a result of the damage caused by floods and the real risk they pose to people’s homes and finances, the Environment Agency has recently launched a series of guides aimed at reducing the costs and damage inflicted by floods.

Although it is still early days, the Met Office’s weather forecast for this summer so far is hot and wet, with the risk of incessant rain like last summer viewed as low. However, despite this low risk, flooding is still a real possibility and the guides, advising homeowners on the action to take before, during and after they have been affected, recognise this fact.

Environment Agency chief executive, Barbara Young, said: “People must be prepared for floods and know what to do if the worst happens. We strongly advise that every household in a flood risk area has their own plan of action that can be quickly put in place during a flood emergency.”

As well as emergency action plans, the Environment Agency’s flood guides cover longer term action such as the importance of having the correct home insurance in the first place, on top of how to deal with an insurance claim when the time comes.

Shopping for home insurance online is easy. There are a ton of websites that make it so easy to enter the proper information in order to give you an accurate quote. The home policy has less required information than the auto policy. Auto insurance depends so much on extensive driver and vehicle information. The homeowner policy depends on some basic information. The most important calculation is the actual square footage of your home. When you shop online they will want this information.

Insurance companies need this because they use various calculators to determine building costs per square footage. The online quote has a questionnaire that needs completed that will ask you some other valuable information that helps determine the replacement value of your home. Air conditioning and fireplaces increase property replacement values. The size of your deck or patio is also considered when determining the insurance amount. There are questions about your garage location. Finished basements increase the replacement value and the online quote will often ask you the percentage of your basement that is finished.

Prior insurance is important when shopping for insurance coverage for a home that you have been residing in for a while. You will be asked about your present insurance. Having insurance is a must when comparison shopping because it is stability and credit factor that will make the risk more acceptable for the insurance company. If you want personal items insured on a rider of some kind then you will most likely need proof of their value. Jewelry riders require recent appraisals and or receipts to prove their worth.

The online quote process may reveal something about your present coverage that you were unaware of. You may find that after you complete a replacement cost estimator with several companies that your home is either under insured or over insured. This is one of the great benefits of shopping online. It enables you to do some of your own research. Shop for homeowner’s insurance online. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Ideally, the amount of coverage you carry should equal the cost of rebuilding your home after a total loss.

It pays living expenses which go over and above your normal living expenses up to the limit provided in your policy.

First, it provides for your legal defense against a liability claim–whether the claim is legitimate or not. Second, it will pay any court judgments against you up to the policy limit.

All bills are paid, up to your policy limit, whether or not you’re legally responsible.

Homeowners policies have many other optional features available to you depending on your individual need. These include earthquake and scheduled personal property coverage.
